WHO ARE WE?
We are a non-profit making organisation dedicated to the growth and prosperity of local business. We are funded by local authorities, local business and commerce, and by the Jobcentre Plus.
Our area focuses mainly on the Yorkshire Coast but specific projects are delivered on a national basis.
NFEA (National Federation of Enterprise Agencies)
We work closely with other Enterprise agencies around the country and also with SFEDI (Small Firms Excellence Development Initiative).
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
"To help businesses to start up, grow, and prosper"
To achieve this goal we will work passionately and tirelessly to support all Organisations who share our commitment to help every individual, regardless of any disadvantage. We will strive to assist all in achieving their dream to develop themselves and take their place, fulfilled in both life and work.
Starting in Business
Anyone considering starting a business can contact the Agency, arrange to meet an adviser and discuss the many things that they should be considering before undertaking the sometimes hazardous step of self-employment. This may cover such topics as raising finance, grants, taxation, National Insurance Contributions, Business Plans, cash flow, book-keeping, VAT, renting property etc., etc.
There are many other Agencies who can help people in business. We liaise with most of them. Well known names are: Department of Trade and Industry, Jobcentre Plus, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Borough Council, Rural Development Commission, Prince's Youth Business Trust, Livewire, The Careers Service, other Local Enterprise Agencies, etc., etc. We can advise you on any other organisation who may be able to help you.
Jobcentre Plus
We hold contracts with the Jobcentre Plus for the administration of various schemes designed to provide advice, support and training to both new and existing businesses.
Contact us if you require advice on what is available.
Existing Businesses
If you are in business you will probably know more about running your business than any adviser. It is not our job to tell you how to run your business but all businesses will at times benefit from independent specialist advice e.g. reaching the VAT limit - how do you register? Want to employ someone - how do you do it? Expanding your business - are there any national or local grants applicable? Want to computerise your business - what are the best systems?
You can, of course, pay for these sort of services. We provide a FREE, INDEPENDENT AND CONFIDENTIAL SERVICE.
Workshops/Office Premises
The Agency can advise you on obtaining suitable workshops/office premises.
The Agency has a number of small units in the Scarborough area that are available for rent and suitable for most small business purposes. Cayley Court, our new purpose built hi-tech and modern office & workshop space. You can also use this website to instantly view the availability of our office premises.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
Nationally the performance of the British economy has been poor compared with our major competitors. While of course there are many reasons for this, one which is generally accepted is that in the past the support given to 'Enterprise' has been far below that offered for example in France or Germany.
The government certainly sees future growth of the economy being dependent on enterprise, innovation and growth of the small business sector in general.
Locally we are all dependent to some extent on the growth and prosperity of local industry and commerce.
